...that with the help of Communities In Schools Dallas Region, Leonardo is learning to speak English?
Leonardo is small for his age, socially behind, and until recently, he didn't speak a word of English. He just moved to the U.S. from Mexico, and had never attended school before. When he came to Maple Lawn Elementary, he was placed into 1st grade, although his academic skills were far behind the other students in his class. Communities In Schools Dallas Region, Inc. (CISDR) started working with him on English and with some basic facts such as numbers, colors and shapes. He is now learning sounds and writing letters. Thanks to CISDR, Leonardo has improved significantly in his English-language skills.
Since 1985, CISDR has served 420,000 students like Leonardo. With programs in nine local school districts, CISDR has helped students of all ages achieve academically and graduate.
