Communities In Schools Dallas Region Student Stories

Rubi

James

James, a senior, was living in a bad situation without any parental support or positive influence before CIS began working with him. “I began going to CIS when I was in high school,” says James. “CIS has helped me 100%, meeting with me in classrooms and during lunch. They even brought people in to talk to me.” With help from CIS James began to improve his attitude, self-esteem and outlook. As he puts it, “I've learned to stay on track more. I wasn't the best student and without CIS it wouldn't be good for me right now.”

According to James, “CIS will get you on track. If they can provide it then they will. They help those who help themselves.” What James especially appreciated about the help he received from CIS was “talking to them about my problems and hearing the advice they gave me.”

The outlook for James appears bright. He says his education is the most important thing to him now. He says, “if you don't have that then you don’t anything. I want to be a biochemist because chemistry comes easy to me or maybe become a special education teacher. When I was teaching basketball for Special Olympics I found I liked working with the kids.”
