2nd Annual North Texas All-American Soapbox Derby
Saturday, June 14, 2008
Students from Communities In Schools Dallas Region (CISDR) are set to participate in the Plano Rotary Club's Second Annual North Texas All-American Soapbox Derby on June 14, 2008 at Plano Senior High School. The races will begin at 8 a.m. Proceeds from the event will benefit Plano Rotary Foundation charities and CISDR, which will use the proceeds to provide academic and social service support to more than 7,800 at-risk public schoolchildren in the Dallas, Collin, Ellis and Hunt counties next school year.
Last year marked the inaugural North Texas All-American Soapbox Derby, which took place in Plano with participants from across the Metroplex. Prior to race day, each student was given the opportunity to construct their own soap box race car, with the help of local volunteers and celebrity guest Jimmy Johnson, winner of the 2006 NASCAR championship. In addition to building their own vehicles, participants honed their math and science skills through instruction in aerodynamics, physics and more. The program has become an engaging method of cultivating students' interests in math, science and engineering.
